Bruce Buchanan, board chair, is president of Hutchinson-based Harris Enterprises, corporate owner of six daily newspapers and a marketing company. A Kansas native, he was born in Bucklin, but grew up in the north-central town of Washington where his parents owned and operated the weekly Washington County News. Bruce holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from Kansas State University. Upon graduation in 1981, he went to work as a reporter-editor for The Hutchinson News. A few months later, he was accepted into the Harris group's management training program. He spent time in every newspaper department at several locations. During his career with Harris, he was editor and publisher of the newspapers in Parsons, Olathe and Hutchinson before moving into a corporate position in 1996. He was named president of Harris Enterprises in 2006. Beyond his role on the Promise Regional board, Bruce also serves on the board of the Kansas Cosmosphere Foundation and is a member of the Kansas Commission on Judicial Qualifications. He is married to Lynette Lacy. They have two sons, Sean and Benjamin.
David Neal, associate director for USB Wealth Management US and board member, earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas and his MBA degree from St. Louis University. David began his career as an assistant basketball coach at St. Louis before joining USB in 2000, earning his Portfolio Manager designation in 2010. A past President of the Board for the Kansas Chapter of the Leukemia Society, a United Way Young Leader, and Wichita Business Journal's 40 Under 40, David currently serves as Director of the John & Michael Neal Foundation for Cancer Research. Spare time is spent with his wife and their children, Katie and Jack (twins), Ben, and Andrew.
Rex Degner, M.D., a pathologist, is an at-large representative for the medical staff. He was raised in Great Bend and left to attend Kansas State, where he earned his bachelor's degree in biology before attending University of Kansas to receive his M.D. Dr. Degner cheers on both schools, but when pressed, he admits he'd wear purple over blue. After completing his pathology residency, he moved home to Great Bend in 1990 where he practiced for 10 years. In 2000, he joined Reno Pathology Associates in Hutchinson. Dr. Degner and his wife Karla have 4 children. When away from work, Dr. Degner enjoys hunting, fishing and golfing.
Mike Evans, C.P.A., is president of Lindburg Vogel Pierce Faris, Chartered. Mike was born in Halstead and moved to Hutchinson in 1976. He has 30 years of experience at his accounting firm. Mike serves as the board treasurer. He and his wife Sue have 3 children and 3 grandchildren. Aside from spending time with them, he really enjoys fishing.
Dr. Timothy Crater, chief of staff, is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Wake Forest University. He attended the University of Kansas School Of Medicine and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society prior to graduation in 1998. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. Prior to attending medical school, Crater served as an artillery officer in the US Army. After graduating from the US Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia in 1990, he served as a forward observer team leader in the First Infantry Division. His military awards include: the Bronze Star Medal with Combat āVā, Army Commendation Medal, and the Army Achievement Medal with oak leaf cluster. Dr. Crater currently practices Internal Medicine at the Hutchinson Clinic.
Dr. James Siler, vice chief of staff, is originally from Wichita. He attended medical school at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City, Kansas. His residency was served at the University of Kansas School Of Medicine in Wichita. Dr. Siler is board certified in Internal Medicine and has practiced at Hutchinson Clinic since 2008.
John Swearer, J.D., was born and raised in Hutchinson. Graduating from Grinnell College in 1980 and University of Kansas School of Law in 1983, he returned home to practice law and is now a partner at the law firm Martindell Swearer Shaffer Ridenour, LLP, where he has worked the last 26 years. John is very active in the community; he has served in leadership roles for various non-profit and civic organizations, some of which include: Reno County Chapter of the American Red Cross, Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce, Reno County Republican Party and the Hutchinson Community Foundation. Presently, outside of his board appointment, he also serves as president of the Reno County Bar Association. John is married to Dell Marie Shanahan Swearer and has 2 children.
Carolyn H. Patterson, board vice chair, is a graduate of the University of Kansas and the KU School of Law. She has practiced law in both Wyoming and Kansas. She retired in June 2010 as the City Attorney of the City of Hutchinson. Carolyn has served on many boards in Hutchinson, among them the Hutchinson Community Health Center Board and seven years on the board of Health Care, Inc., 3 years as chairman. She is married to a retired physician and has 3 grown children. She is a painter of watercolors and rides her bike across Kansas every summer.
John Deardoff, board member since 2007, has years of experience in local city government. He began his career in Dodge City as assistant city manager in 1980. In 1984, he assumed the city manager position in Sterling. From 1989 ā 1994, John was assistant city manager in Hutchinson. Relocating again to Dodge City, he worked as city manager for 8 years before finally returning to Hutchinson in 2005 where he currently serves in the same capacity. John served on the hospital board in Dodge City and really enjoyed his experience. In his leadership positions, he's seen the important role hospitals play in their communities; it makes sense that someone with management experience and passion for local issues would serve on our own board. John enjoys golfing, exercising and spending time with his wife Jerri and their 3 daughters. All should know there are perks to the job of city manager. John is an honorary marshall of Dodge City and even has the badge to prove it. This designation may not give him gun slinging rights, but when he's within Dodge City limits, there are a few undisclosed privileges.
Evan Moodie, board member since 2009, is employed with Cargill Salt. Born and raised in Pittsburg, Kansas and an alumnus of HCC and Kansas State University, Evan and his wife Melissa moved to Hutchinson in 2005. Evan is a member of the Hutchinson Rotary Club and is also involved with Young Professionals of Reno County.
Kevin Miller, F.A.C.H.E., came to Hutchinson in July of 2011 to assume the role of President and Chief Executive Officer of Promise Regional Medical Center and the Promise Regional Healthcare System. Kevin has worked in the field of hospital operations for 34 years, most recently as President and Chief Executive Officer at Ashtabula County Medical Center and ACMC Healthcare System, a member of the Cleveland Clinic Health System. At Ashtabula, he led a 358-bed, 2 hospital system. Prior to his 17 years as a hospital/health system president, Mr. Miller served in business development roles in both proprietary and non-profit hospital systems at both the corporate and local hospital level. Mr. Miller has attained Fellowship status with the American College of Healthcare Executives and is board-certified in healthcare management. Kevin received his Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Records Administration from Illinois State University in 1977 and his Master of Science degree in Health Services Administration from The College of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois, in 1982. He and his wife, Bev, have two children, Danielle and Adam, and are the proud grandparents of three.
John Jones, president & CEO of Data Center, Inc., is a graduate of Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana. After graduation, he remained in New Orleans and taught high school classes while also coaching football and track. He began his career in the banking industry in 1978 as a programmer/analyst. Over the years, John served in various management roles in the southeastern U.S. Recruited by DCI in 1999, he and his family moved to Hutchinson where he became executive vice-president of operations. John was elected as president/CEO in December 2003. He and his wife, Susan, have 2 daughters, Jennifer and Lauren.
Ann Bush, board secretary and president of City Beverage Co., Inc. came to Hutchinson in 1975. She moved away to Kansas City where she worked as a critical care nurse for 8 years. Ann received her master's degree in nursing from the University of Kansas Medical Center and again relocated to Denver to practice as a cardiovascular clinical nurse specialist for 6 more years. Finally, in 1997 she returned to the area with her husband Bob to purchase her parents' business. Through her involvement with the Chamber of Commerce board, Ann recognized how important the hospital is to the community, both as an employer and economic driver. Her nursing background and passion for quality healthcare are valuable as the board works toward accreditation. Ann is quite active and enjoys the outdoors. When living in Colorado, she and Bob had a goal of scaling all of the 14,000+ peaks. Now flatlanders, they recognize that their goal may be a bit more difficult to accomplish.
Kent Tyler is president of Collins Bus Corporation in South Hutchinson. In addition to serving on the hospital board, Kent is a member of the executive committee for the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce.
Lois Schlickau, president of the Auxiliary, is a co-owner of Schlickau Herefords, Haven. After graduating from Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College, she worked as private secretary to the Grace Hospital Administrator. She married George Schlickau and they raised four children. Lois is actively involved in volunteer work and has served on many county and local boards, among them the Historical Society, Hutchinson Community Foundation, Red Cross, Reno County Extension, BankHaven and Haven Chamber of Commerce. She was the first woman to serve as president of the Kansas State Fair Board and Kansas State Board of Agriculture. She also served on numerous agriculture related boards including Kansas Agri-Women, Kansas Hereford Women, Kansas Value Added Center, American Hereford Women and American Agri-Women. In addition to volunteering, her hobbies include baking, reading, traveling, and spending time with grandchildren.
Verlin Janzen, M.D., F.A.A.F.P., is an at-large representative for the medical staff. Dr. Janzen graduated with a B.S. in medical technology in 1978 from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. He pursued graduate studies for his master's in laboratory administration before diving into medical school. He graduated with his medical degree in 1988. Dr. Janzen practiced in Nebraska City, Neb., for 7 years and then moved to the Hutchinson area in 1995 to join the Hutchinson Clinic family practice department. He brings strong medical staff connections and expertise to the board. Dr. Janzen and his wife Mary Lou raised 3 children, 2 of whom are working or training in clinical areas. His hobbies include woodworking and fishing for bass, walleye and northern pike.
Allen Fee, a lifelong Hutchinson resident, is president of Fee Insurance Group. He began his career with the family business upon graduating from KU in 1984. Over the years, Allan has served as chairman for several organizations including: the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center, United Way, Rotary and the Chamber of Commerce. His involvement on the hospital's board is personal. All four of his children were born at Promise Regional and his family experienced the death of his father at the hospital in 2003. He recognizes how valuable Promise is to the community and its future and he brings a unique understanding of the medical community because of his business experience. Allan and his wife Kriss have four children: Jordan, Tyler, Melissa and Colton.
Keith Hughes, CEO at First National Bank of Hutchinson, has served on the board since 2010. He grew up in Oakley, Kan., and after graduation from Kansas State University in 1980, moved to Hutchinson. With a dual degree in corporate finance and accounting and an added graduate degree in banking from SWGSB, Southern Methodist University, Keith was quite prepared for a career in banking. Except for a three year stint at another company, he has been employed in various capacities at First National. Most recently, he was named CEO. Through his role on the Promise Regional board, Keith recognizes the hospital's important position in the local and regional economy and he brings great experience and expertise in corporate finance and economics to the group. He and his wife Renee have two sons, Logan and Nolan. His sons' involvement in sports and academics provide him plenty to do in his free time. He also enjoys golfing, hunting waterfowl and upland game and participating in home projects. A lesser-known fact, Keith is quite a connoisseur of history and artifacts from the late 19th century. It probably won't come as a surprise to learn that he's especially interested in US currency.
